The fic that wasn't meant to be...

I started this some time after The Ringer but before Fleur de Lis. Obviously, the timing and manner in which Coraline was turned are totally wrong, but it seemed like a good idea a the time.

In The Beginning; 1847

Coraline bent to kiss her sleeping infant one last time. She tried to feel a shred of maternal love, but failed. The baby girl was beautiful, with her mother’s dark hair and eyes, closed in slumber for now. The snoring in the next room assured the young woman that her husband was asleep as well. Passed out from drink, most likely. Coraline no longer cared, as she’d stopped sharing his bed the moment he had found out she was with child. She hadn’t meant to carry this one to term, but her husband’s vigilance prevented her from disposing of it like the other two. The baby was a pretty thing, Coraline was forced to admit, but not a part of the life she was meant to have.

She straightened and checked her reflection in the full-length mirror she’d moved into her boudoir. Hips and breasts a bit curvier than before, but at least the child hadn’t totally spoiled her figure. Damn Hubert for insisting she give him a son. Well, at least she had the last laugh on that score. His daughter would be the only trace left of Coraline come morning. She picked up her valise and descended swiftly down the servants’ staircase. The front door creaked, and Coraline wouldn’t be thwarted in her quest for freedom. Freedom from Hubert, her folly of a marriage, and motherhood. She shuddered at the last.

Andrei wanted Coraline for herself; not as a brood mare. He was even richer than Hubert, though she was a bit skeptical about his claim to Romanian royalty. But no matter. He was dark and mysterious; dangerous. Everything that Hubert was not. Hubert represented stability; more or less. A bit less when he was drinking, though even then the money he frittered away at gaming houses hadn’t seemed to make a dent in his finances. But Andrei had even more money to waste, and he represented the reckless abandon Coraline so craved for the last seven years. A woman of middle-age, two and thirty years, didn’t say no to an offer like Andrei’s.

Perhaps she should have.

That's all there is, and there most likely won't be more.
